The phenomenon of framing and borders of a literary work has from the very beginning of the development of modern literary theory captured the attention of theoreticians. In structuralism, frames are considered as a privileged morphological segment of the text considering that it appears on its outter edges. Jurij Lotman speaks about the structurally strong position of frames, and in classical narratology the study on paratext by Gerard Genette will be greatly influential. With the development of cognitive orientation in post-classical narratology, the frame becomes one of the primary research topics, both in meta-theoretical and interpretative terms. In the introduction section of the journal Framing Borders in Literature and Other Media (2006), Werner Wolf starts from the linguistic insight of Charles Fillmore, and defnes the frame of artifacts as a cognitive meta-concept, or more precisely, a cultural contruct that possesses certain historical and cultural flexibility. The focus of his approach is “framing” as the process of coding of cognitive frames. The priviledged status of this theoretical term, Wolf puts forward along with the thesis of the frame as a transmedial phenomenon, whereas the confrmation of his thesis is found in the interdisciplinary nature of the journal. Despite a number of new insight, the frame of fctionality still stands as a challenge, as well as the problem of meta-framed conceptualization.
